destination-inspired collections, comfy sectionals and happy youth pieces among top trends in home furnishings at high point this fall
by debra mcgaughey
The latest direction in furniture has taken a page from the 1960s. Not the vivid colors or literal style of the time, mind you. But it has borrowed one of its more infamous lines of expression: If it feels good, do it.
What does this translate to for home furnishings? It means we’re entering a period where soft, curvy furniture is coming back into vogue.
It means a focus on uncluttered, handsome designs that fit our varied lifestyles and residences. It means youth (and youthful) furniture that is bright, bold, stylish and expressive. And it means furniture with beautiful, international influences that are easy
on the eye and true treasures to own.
All these trends were prevalent at the High Point, N.C., International Home Furnishings Market this fall.
DÉCOR DIVERSITY
In short, furniture is looking and feeling good. If you like a piece, you will want to get it, largely due to its inherent aesthetic appeal (which you can now customize like never before) and well-thought-out function. And if it’s been more than 10 or 20 years since you’ve decided to update your major pieces, you couldn’t have picked a better time for shopping. Choices are vast and growing larger.
“There is so much diversity that there is truly something for everyone,” says Patricia Bowling, director of communications for the American Home Furnishing Alliance, a High Point-based trade association representing more than 200 major furniture manufacturers. “You can’t even say, ‘There is no more of this, there’s no more of that.’
It seems like the range of styles available continues to expand.”
WORLDLY INFLUENCES
One of the more prevalent trends is to capture the best of diverse cultures and unique designs. Some influences include the Mediterranean region and Spain, the jagged coastline and rustic beauty of California and even the urban enclaves of Chicago and (yes) Canada.
Martha Stewart Signature’s Katonah Collection by Bernhardt offers a stunning red dresser in rich mahogany and cherry wood, with finishes featuring chinoiserie, lava stone and black lacquer.
Bassett’s Yaletown grouping, inspired by the Vancouver harbor community of the same name, is sleek and contemporary. With its burl finish and cherry veneers, Yaletown has bowed drawer fronts and geometric hardware that speak class with conviction. California’s rustic terrain is captured in the Toluca Lake Collection by Stanley Furniture. The finish is espresso dark and worn and filled with intricate bead moldings.
